Day 1
On Saturday 25th July 2015, Goldthorpe Scout Group set up their camp at Hesley Wood Scout Activity Centre in Chapeltown, Sheffield.
Camp Kitchen
Tree Lined Tentage

Mask making

Bouncy castle surprise - enjoyed by all
Activities suitable for Beavers, Cubs and Scouts ran throughout the day, including animal mask making, and a fun joker hunt, followed by a great tea, camp chilli.  The evening ended with a rousing camp fire, led by camp fire Dave, and then hot chocolate and marshmallows.

Day 2
On Sunday 26th July, we awoke to rain, but it did not dampen our spirits, as we embarked on another packed day of fun and adventure making.  With Shelter making, Pioneering and playing games around these themes, our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts made new friends and looked out for each other.  We said goodbye to our Beavers at 4pm, they all had a great stay in the dormitories.  With Scout made coleslaw and a hot fire, we made tasty jacket potatoes and a range of great fillings.

Pioneering - Flag pole by Pete and our Scouts and older Cubs

Pioneering - Chariot Racing
Pioneering - Mini Raft Racing
Day 3

On Monday 27th July, we awoke to rain, so it was on with the waterproofs and into the day.  It was a walk to Wentworth Farm and Garden centre.  The rain came in 2 varieties, wet and wetter, so it was great to see the Cubs and Scouts, toughen up and make it through to Wentworth.  We did get some respite from time to time and one benefit of it raining was that the farm was lovely and quiet :-)  The Cubs and Scouts were treated to a nature hunt, and the handling of exotic pets like snakes.

Smiling in the rain
When we returned to Camp, some Scouts helped to make handmade burgers, and we had a great BBQ, followed by a hot fire to try and drive the rain away.

Day 4
Summer Camp or Glastonbury?

Pedal Karts
Some Cubs had a height advantage on the obstacle course
Team work - belaying each other on the crate stack

That's high enough!
On Tuesday 28th we had a day of great activities planned, regardless of the weather, which made us change our plans every so slightly.  With Peddle Karts, a tough mudder type Obstacle Course, and Crate Stacking, the Cubs and Scouts were having an absolute ball, some found the mud and rain a challenge, others were tackling their fear of heights and others were generally tired from being in the fresh air all week.  Another great meal was prepared by our resident camp chef Mark and we had another wide game (ask your Cub or Scout what a wide game is) with more campfire songs accompanied by our Chairman on guitar, followed by the obligatory hot chocolate.

Day 5
Slip sliding away...
On our final day, the rain gave us a break, and we got on with the unenviable task of packing up camp.  The Cubs and Scouts got their own kit together and we took them off to play rounders and on a 15m long water slide.

Thank you to you all, the leaders, assistants, helpers, parents and the Scouts.  It was an absolutely 5 star camp, we saw everyone enjoy some, part or all of it.  It was a great experience.

Cubs Visit Goldthorpe Library

Last week the cubs paid a visit to the local library in Goldthorpe as part of their  Book Reader Activity Badge They had a great time as they learnt about the difference between Fiction and Non-Fiction. They discovered where to look in the library for a dictionary and how to use a thesaurus. They found out how the library catalogues their books so that you can find them easily and how you should care for your books so that they last a lifetime. The next stage in this badge is for the cubs to read 6 books. They should be able to name the authors and be able to tell the other cubs about the books they have read. Thanks very much to the staff at the library for showing our cubs the ropes!

Goldthorpe Scout Section invests 10 new Scouts into its brand new Scout section

Goldthorpe's Scout Section It was with great pride that 10 new Scouts were officially invested into the Scout Section of the 6th Barnsley (Goldthorpe) Scout Group today.  Just over 18 months ago, there was no Scout Group, and there had been no Scouts in Goldthorpe for over 12 years.  Today marks a watershed moment, as 10 new Scouts were invested into a group alongside 21 Beaver Scouts and 26 Cub Scouts, with several on a waiting list to join and new enquiries all the time.  The group is in great shape due to the persistence and determination of the parents who have all stepped up to play a role in supporting the group.  In particular, thanks has to be made to our Assistant Group Scout Leader, Breeze (Andrea), who has worked across all 3 sections and kept me going in truly challenging times.  I also make a special mention of our Treasurer, Mark Davis, and Cub Scout Leader Akela (Cheryl) and Thunder (Ricky) our Beaver Scout Leader who have risen to the challen...
