Goldthorpe Scout Section invests 10 new Scouts into its brand new Scout section

Goldthorpe's Scout Section
It was with great pride that 10 new Scouts were officially invested into the Scout Section of the 6th Barnsley (Goldthorpe) Scout Group today.  Just over 18 months ago, there was no Scout Group, and there had been no Scouts in Goldthorpe for over 12 years.  Today marks a watershed moment, as 10 new Scouts were invested into a group alongside 21 Beaver Scouts and 26 Cub Scouts, with several on a waiting list to join and new enquiries all the time.  The group is in great shape due to the persistence and determination of the parents who have all stepped up to play a role in supporting the group.  In particular, thanks has to be made to our Assistant Group Scout Leader, Breeze (Andrea), who has worked across all 3 sections and kept me going in truly challenging times.  I also make a special mention of our Treasurer, Mark Davis, and Cub Scout Leader Akela (Cheryl) and Thunder (Ricky) our Beaver Scout Leader who have risen to the challenge of taking on such responsible roles.

We have welcomed several additions to the Group recently in the form of adult leaders, and 2 of them were invested tonight.  So here is an official welcome to Daz and Wayne, who were invested into our Scout Section as Assistant Scout Leaders, although Daz will be swapping to our Cub section after the Summer Camp, and we will welcome Trudy as an Assistant Scout Leader.

Wayne and Daz taking the Scout Promise

Congratulations goes to Pete Wade who has taken on the role of Scout Leader and will be well supported by Wayne, Trudy and Scott and the rest of the adult leaders from across the group as we look to expand our Scout section in 2015.

This weekend has been the first residential experience for the Scout section, they have been to our local fish & chip shop, JJ's on Fredrick Street, and John the owner took them through how they handle food preparation and food hygiene as part of the Chef's Badge.  Then after a great portion of fish and chips we went off to look for our first geocache hunt, and Alisha, one of our newest Scouts, found it.  We'll certainly be doing more of that as we go on with our Geocaching badge.  Then we took a hike around Phoenix Park, and came back to pitch many different types of tents from pop up to 8 man group tents as part of the Camper badge.  Backwoods cooking was next, as the Scouts prepared their own food and cooked it on open fires.  They had a wide range of delicious goodies, including Eggs cooked in a grapefruit, bananas with chocolate, damper bread (dough on sticks!) and the best sausage rolls you have tasted.  With a movie night to follow and sleeping in our tents, the Scouts are earning their first nights away badge, and it has been very well earned.  Sunday sees a creative challenge as they make paracord keyrings for fathers day presents, so if you are reading this before, look surprised ;-)

Having a breather as the fires burn
Goldthorpe Scouts are back!
