Cracking Cubs Summer Sleepover

Early preparations for a hall full of Goldthorpe Cub Scouts
Friday evening saw 17 Goldthorpe Cub Scouts gather to enjoy a varied weekend of fun activities and games.

After setting up, the Cubs quickly established 3 fires ready to cook a range of Scouts backwood recipes, from damper bread, baked apples & raisins, sausage rolls, banana & chocolate, and marshmallow s'mores.

Games were played outside around the Scout Hut grounds.  With adult support from Akela (Cheryl), Shere Khan (Pete), Mark, (Breeze) Andrea, Thunder (Ricky), Scott and Ed, the weekend was a great success.

Everyone was involved in cooking over the open fires

Later Friday evening, a settling game of bingo, before a fun movie and bed

Some of the Cubs had never stayed away from home and this was their first experience of sleeping out.  It will be a badge worth earning for all of them.

Getting direction from the Forestry Commission Ranger
On Saturday morning the Cubs, were off to Pheonix Park to experience Orienteering with expert oversight from our local Ranger team, Paul and Emma.  It was a great exercise and everyone had a fabulous time.

Finally congratulations to Akela (Cheryl) who has been recommended, after an assessment from Barnsley District Scouts, to be issued with a Nights Away Permit, allowing Cheryl to lead Scout residential experiences indoors.  Cheryl will be looking to extend this to a Campsite Permit soon, but in the meantime, congratulations from all the other Scout leaders.

Akela (Cheryl) happy with her successful sleepover

Goldthorpe's Scout Section It was with great pride that 10 new Scouts were officially invested into the Scout Section of the 6th Barnsley (Goldthorpe) Scout Group today.  Just over 18 months ago, there was no Scout Group, and there had been no Scouts in Goldthorpe for over 12 years.  Today marks a watershed moment, as 10 new Scouts were invested into a group alongside 21 Beaver Scouts and 26 Cub Scouts, with several on a waiting list to join and new enquiries all the time.  The group is in great shape due to the persistence and determination of the parents who have all stepped up to play a role in supporting the group.  In particular, thanks has to be made to our Assistant Group Scout Leader, Breeze (Andrea), who has worked across all 3 sections and kept me going in truly challenging times.  I also make a special mention of our Treasurer, Mark Davis, and Cub Scout Leader Akela (Cheryl) and Thunder (Ricky) our Beaver Scout Leader who have risen to the challen...
