Thanks for the donation! (Wibbles Scout Troop from Penistone)

A scout troop from Penistone, Barnsley, called the "Wibbles" has made a generous donation of £200 to the development of Scouting within Goldthorpe.

Alison Lamb, the Wibbles Assistant Scout Leader explained that in the run up to Christmas 2013, the Scouts from the Wibbles troop worked towards their Scout Entrepreneur badge in order to raise some money for worthy causes.

Entrepreneur Badge
To get this badge the Wibbles Scouts from Penistone, needed to demonstrate an aptitude for understanding the Mind for Business principles

The Scouts had to design and plan product ideas, produce a business model and costings and then manufacture a product that they could sell - all with a start up grant of only £20. Making use of several ideas, the Scouts sold their products on key dates at events in Penistone. Christmas decorations made from salt dough and dried fruit were produced and painted in their hundreds as well as Reindeer food, Cookies and chocolate marshmallows in bags. The scouts then split their resources to sell at school (with permission from teachers), at the christmas lights switch on in Penistone and at the Scouts christmas carol service. All were very successful and in total raised just over £450. This money is now being split between worthy causes that the troop felt would benefit from all of their hard work.
From their proceeds the Wibbles Scouts have donated £200 to go towards the purchase of new equipment for Goldthorpe Scout Group. The Wibbles Scouts felt that as a new group the Goldthorpe Cubs and Beavers sections would benefit from support in order to buy craft materials, games equipment or even maps and compasses!

The Goldthorpe Scout leaders, on behalf of the Goldthorpe Beavers and Cubs are truly grateful for this act of kindness and it reflects well on the spirit of supporting the activities of others and helping to grow the Scouting movement. We welcome the entrepreneurs from the Wibbles Troop to one of our Beavers or Cubs weekly meetings to see first hand how their investment is being nurtured in the lively antics of our Goldthorpe Beavers and Cubs.

Cubs Visit Goldthorpe Library

Last week the cubs paid a visit to the local library in Goldthorpe as part of their  Book Reader Activity Badge They had a great time as they learnt about the difference between Fiction and Non-Fiction. They discovered where to look in the library for a dictionary and how to use a thesaurus. They found out how the library catalogues their books so that you can find them easily and how you should care for your books so that they last a lifetime. The next stage in this badge is for the cubs to read 6 books. They should be able to name the authors and be able to tell the other cubs about the books they have read. Thanks very much to the staff at the library for showing our cubs the ropes!
