In this week's Dearne Valley Weekender; Welcome Home: scouting returns

Goldthorpe Scouts story is in this week's Dearne Valley Weekender
This week's Dearne Valley Weekender has run a story based on the following press release about our fantastic growth in Beavers and Cubs.  The full story, and the rest of the paper can be read online.

6th Barnsley (Goldthorpe) Scout Group has achieved its ambition of bringing Scouting back to Goldthorpe since re-opening the group on December 3rd 2013, after opening 2 sections, for boys and girls: Beavers; aged between 6 and 8 years & Cubs; aged between 8 and 10 ½ years.  After a successful recruitment campaign, via school visits, leaflet drops and through the internet,  the Scout Group has recruited 38 youth members, with 26 on the waiting to join list.

Ed Reid, the Group Scout Leader said “The support from the parents, local community, including Barnsley Council, the local councillors, the police, schools, the local parish Church, Goldthorpe development group and the Goldthorpe & Thurnscoe Ward Alliances as well as the Thurnscoe Crime & Safety Group has been amazing”.  He added “Fun and adventure can begin, in part,  thanks to the generous donations, with the likes of a recent grant from the local Co-Op which is at the end of Lockwood Road, where the Scout & Guide HQ is located in Goldthorpe”.

Kirsty Smith, a Goldthorpe Beaver Scout Parent, said  “I think it’s amazing what you do, and couldn’t be more grateful, John loves going every week and is very proud to be a Beaver”.  Kimberley Irving, another Goldthorpe Beaver Scout Parent, said “Beavers is brilliant, its helped Karly with her confidence and socialising skills, everyone is friendly and all the kids get on together".

Helen Wright, a Beaver Scout parent herself and Goldthorpe’s Cub Scout Leader said “This group obviously means such a lot to the local community, bringing back Scouting to Goldthorpe after an absence of over 12 years to such a warm reception, is absolutely fantastic!  The Beaver Scouts are having some great experiences already, being welcomed into the group as part of their investiture ceremony was just the start of their adventure, there is so much planned for this year alone, including sleepovers, day visits and outdoor activities like camping, we can’t wait to join in!”.

Goldthorpe Scouts are looking to continue with their plan to bring back Scouting to Goldthorpe, by setting up a Scout section for girls and boys aged between 10 ½ and 14 in early 2015.  New adult volunteers are being recruited now and offered support and training in readiness for this next step in the adventure – why not be one of them? About Scouting in Goldthorpe:
·         * Goldthorpe Scout Group was one of the first 100 groups in the world to be established in 1908, originally as the 1st Don & Dearne (Goldthorpe). It re-opened in December 2013 after an absence of more than 12 years

·         * Adventure is at the core of Scouting, and we passionately believe in helping our members achieve their full physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potential by working in teams, learning by doing and thinking for themselves

·        * We can access over 200 activities offered by Scouting around the UK, made possible by the efforts of 100,000 voluntary adult leaders, ordinary people, just like you and me.  This has made Scouting the largest co-educational youth movement in the country

·        * There are 38 youth members in the 6th Barnsley (Goldthorpe) Scout Group, supported by 7 adults who support the work of the Group

·        * Re-opened in December 2013, in 2014,  the Group plans to deliver a range of exciting activities targeted at developing  the member’s skills and understanding, whilst being relevant to their age group

Cubs Visit Goldthorpe Library

Last week the cubs paid a visit to the local library in Goldthorpe as part of their  Book Reader Activity Badge They had a great time as they learnt about the difference between Fiction and Non-Fiction. They discovered where to look in the library for a dictionary and how to use a thesaurus. They found out how the library catalogues their books so that you can find them easily and how you should care for your books so that they last a lifetime. The next stage in this badge is for the cubs to read 6 books. They should be able to name the authors and be able to tell the other cubs about the books they have read. Thanks very much to the staff at the library for showing our cubs the ropes!
