#iwill: @goldthorpescout is proud to support @stepuptoserve. Let's get young people volunteering through #UKScouting

Step up to Serve is a campaign to promote youth social action and all the benefits it brings.

"Now finally we are at that moment where we have complete cross-party, cross-sector support to help youth organisations across the country increase opportunities to help young people get more actively involved. By working together, I'm sure we can reach our target of 50% involvement by 2020." - HRH, Prince of Wales

This target would add almost 90 million hours of voluntary work per year, worth almost £700 million to the UK economy. In Canada an estimated 58% of young people participate in volunteering, more than half of them giving more than four hours each per month.

It is hoped that a life-long culture of volunteering will be created through the campaign which aims to increase the chances to get involved.

Goldthorpe Scouts through the UK Scouting Association, are fully behind this campaign and think it will help raise the profile of adult volunteering overall but with a particular focus on getting young people involved.

The campaign calls for adults across the UK to sign up and volunteer at the website www.stepuptoserve.org.uk/iwill They can also pledge a personal #iwill commitment and share it on Twitter to help get more adults involved.

Cubs Visit Goldthorpe Library

Last week the cubs paid a visit to the local library in Goldthorpe as part of their  Book Reader Activity Badge They had a great time as they learnt about the difference between Fiction and Non-Fiction. They discovered where to look in the library for a dictionary and how to use a thesaurus. They found out how the library catalogues their books so that you can find them easily and how you should care for your books so that they last a lifetime. The next stage in this badge is for the cubs to read 6 books. They should be able to name the authors and be able to tell the other cubs about the books they have read. Thanks very much to the staff at the library for showing our cubs the ropes!
