A vision for Scouting towards 2018 in Goldthorpe

What could Scouting bring to the community in and around Goldthorpe as we move towards 2018?  The Scout Association currently has a vision for the UK, but what might that look like for the people who live, work, study and play around the  market centre of Goldthorpe?


With it's prime location between the major road networks, like the A1, M1 and the M62, Goldthorpe village currently offers thousands of working families a gateway to the major economic towns and cities of Yorkshire;
  • Barnsley
  • Bradford
  • Doncaster
  • Leeds
  • Rotherham
  • Wakefield
Having access to a large number of primary, secondary schools, some 4,000 young people being educated in Goldthorpe's schools can look forward to accessing some wonderful parts of the Yorkshire countryside as a Scout.  As well as nearby attractions like;
  • Local parks and lakes
  • Dearne Valley's famous River Dearne
  • Pheonix Park
  • Cawthorne Park
  • Pugney's Waterpark
  • The Award Winning Yorkshire Wildlife Park near Doncaster
There is easy access to more dramatic landscapes from Goldthorpe like;
  • The Peak District National Park
  • Nidderdale, an area of outstanding natural beauty in the Yorkshire Pennines
Scouts in Goldthorpe will find some of their time spent at local Scout camps like;
  • Silverwood near Silkstone
  • Thorpe Hesley near Chapeltown
As they grow up Scouts from around Goldthorpe will progressively be provided with opportunities to increase their level of physical activity whilst being responsible to the environment in which they find themselves.  They will develop into active citizens, engaged in the community, close to Goldthorpe and then later across the United Kingdom and potentially beyond its shores.

In order to achieve this, adults will need to volunteer to provide guidance on new and exciting activities, education in basic life skills, as well as supervision, encouragement and support during their formative years.

Scouts progressing through their time within Goldthorpe Scouts should expect to have helped shape the activities they enjoy.  They will do this regardless of their social status, their ethnic origin, or any other factor as they, as a group, will simply represent a sample of the citizens of Goldthorpe and its surrounding area.

By 2018 a Scout from Goldthorpe should feel empowered to change the world around them in a positive way.  They should be valued by the Scout Group, their families, friends and the wider community, and as a result should feel rightly proud to be a Scout from Goldthorpe.

Since re-opening its doors in December 2013, Goldthorpe Scout Group has successfully established a Beaver Scout Colony and a Cub Scout Pack, offering fun, friendship and adventure for 30 young people aged between 6 and 10 years from across the Dearne Valley.  In less than 12 months time a new Scout Troop will be opened for boys and girls aged between 11 and 14 years. In this week's Dearne Valley Weekender; Welcome Home: scouting returns

Goldthorpe Scouts story is in this week's Dearne Valley Weekender This week's Dearne Valley Weekender has run a story based on the following press release about our fantastic growth in Beavers and Cubs.   The full story, and the rest of the paper can be read online. 6 th Barnsley (Goldthorpe) Scout Group has achieved its ambition of bringing Scouting back to Goldthorpe since re-opening the group on December 3 rd 2013, after opening 2 sections, for boys and girls: Beavers ; aged between 6 and 8 years & Cubs ; aged between 8 and 10 ½ years.  After a successful recruitment campaign, via school visits, leaflet drops and through the internet,  the Scout Group has recruited 38 youth members, with 26 on the waiting to join list. Goldthorpe Scout Section invests 10 new Scouts into its brand new Scout section

Goldthorpe's Scout Section It was with great pride that 10 new Scouts were officially invested into the Scout Section of the 6th Barnsley (Goldthorpe) Scout Group today.  Just over 18 months ago, there was no Scout Group, and there had been no Scouts in Goldthorpe for over 12 years.  Today marks a watershed moment, as 10 new Scouts were invested into a group alongside 21 Beaver Scouts and 26 Cub Scouts, with several on a waiting list to join and new enquiries all the time.  The group is in great shape due to the persistence and determination of the parents who have all stepped up to play a role in supporting the group.  In particular, thanks has to be made to our Assistant Group Scout Leader, Breeze (Andrea), who has worked across all 3 sections and kept me going in truly challenging times.  I also make a special mention of our Treasurer, Mark Davis, and Cub Scout Leader Akela (Cheryl) and Thunder (Ricky) our Beaver Scout Leader who have risen to the challen...
