Cubs and Scouts do 2 activities in 2 locations in 1 evening

Cubs and Scouts were split tonight, with half getting their first taster session of sword fencing and the other half visting the J.A Jones Hoober Observatory as part of their astronomy badge.  Everyone will get a chance to do both activities as we are swapping over next month.  With the space walk planned for tomorrow, and ex Scout, Tim Peake making the first ever space walk for an British astronaut, it's a great time to be doing our badge work.

Did you know that 11 of the 12 people 
who have walked on the moon were Scouts!

Anyway here's a picture that we took of the moon tonight from one of the 2 large telescopes they have.

In this week's Dearne Valley Weekender; Welcome Home: scouting returns

Goldthorpe Scouts story is in this week's Dearne Valley Weekender This week's Dearne Valley Weekender has run a story based on the following press release about our fantastic growth in Beavers and Cubs.   The full story, and the rest of the paper can be read online. 6 th Barnsley (Goldthorpe) Scout Group has achieved its ambition of bringing Scouting back to Goldthorpe since re-opening the group on December 3 rd 2013, after opening 2 sections, for boys and girls: Beavers ; aged between 6 and 8 years & Cubs ; aged between 8 and 10 ½ years.  After a successful recruitment campaign, via school visits, leaflet drops and through the internet,  the Scout Group has recruited 38 youth members, with 26 on the waiting to join list. Goldthorpe Scout Section invests 10 new Scouts into its brand new Scout section

Goldthorpe's Scout Section It was with great pride that 10 new Scouts were officially invested into the Scout Section of the 6th Barnsley (Goldthorpe) Scout Group today.  Just over 18 months ago, there was no Scout Group, and there had been no Scouts in Goldthorpe for over 12 years.  Today marks a watershed moment, as 10 new Scouts were invested into a group alongside 21 Beaver Scouts and 26 Cub Scouts, with several on a waiting list to join and new enquiries all the time.  The group is in great shape due to the persistence and determination of the parents who have all stepped up to play a role in supporting the group.  In particular, thanks has to be made to our Assistant Group Scout Leader, Breeze (Andrea), who has worked across all 3 sections and kept me going in truly challenging times.  I also make a special mention of our Treasurer, Mark Davis, and Cub Scout Leader Akela (Cheryl) and Thunder (Ricky) our Beaver Scout Leader who have risen to the challen...
