Date for your diary - Saturday 16th August 2014 - Thurnscoe Carnival (Summer Fair)

Goldthorpe Scout Group will be supporting the Thurnscoe Summer Carnival on the 16th August 2014, and we'd love to enjoy the day with our Scouts, their friends and families. We'll be running our own stall to promote the Scout group and raising funds by selling 'scout hut' mice and donated baking items. We won't be able to supervise any Scouts on the day, but if you can bring your Scout and stay for an hour or two to enjoy the activities then that would be fantastic, even better if they were in uniform or necker so that other visitors can see what a great mob of Goldthorpe Scouts we have and how proud we are of them all!

Aged 18 or over, living in the Dearne Valley: Are you ready to join the adventure with Goldthorpe Scouts?

Since re-opening its doors in December 2013, Goldthorpe Scout Group has successfully established a Beaver Scout Colony and a Cub Scout Pack, offering fun, friendship and adventure for 30 young people aged between 6 and 10 years from across the Dearne Valley. In less than 12 months time a new Scout Troop will be opened for boys and girls aged between 11 and 14 years. Goldthorpe Scouts story is in this week's Dearne Valley Weekender This week's Dearne Valley Weekender has run a story based on the following press release about our fantastic growth in Beavers and Cubs. The full story, and the rest of the paper can be read online. 6 th Barnsley (Goldthorpe) Scout Group has achieved its ambition of bringing Scouting back to Goldthorpe since re-opening the group on December 3 rd 2013, after opening 2 sections, for boys and girls: Beavers ; aged between 6 and 8 years & Cubs ; aged between 8 and 10 ½ years. After a successful recruitment campaign, via school visits, leaflet drops and through the internet, the Scout Group has recruited 38 youth members, with 26 on the waiting to join list. Cubs Visit Goldthorpe Library

Last week the cubs paid a visit to the local library in Goldthorpe as part of their Book Reader Activity Badge They had a great time as they learnt about the difference between Fiction and Non-Fiction. They discovered where to look in the library for a dictionary and how to use a thesaurus. They found out how the library catalogues their books so that you can find them easily and how you should care for your books so that they last a lifetime. The next stage in this badge is for the cubs to read 6 books. They should be able to name the authors and be able to tell the other cubs about the books they have read. Thanks very much to the staff at the library for showing our cubs the ropes!
