About us

Goldthorpe Scout Group was one of the first 100 groups in the world to be established in 1908, originally as the 1st Don & Dearne (Goldthorpe), according to a Scout Association fact sheet, which you can access here:

In the 1970’s the council boundaries changed so that Goldthorpe came under Barnsley rather than Doncaster, and the Scout group became known as the 6th Barnsley (Goldthorpe) Scout Group and ran successfully until around the start of the new millennium.  Due to illness and a bereavement within the adult leaders team around this time, the group  was closed and despite attempts lasting over a decade was not resurrected.

In September 2013,the group reformed and new life was breathed into the thriving 6th Barnsley (Goldthorpe) Scout Group!

We are one of 16 Scout Groups in the Barnsley District area and of course, we think we are are the best!  We have won a number of awards since we opened:

Proud of Barnsley Children's Champion 2014
Barnsley Beaver Leader of the Year 2014
Barnsley Scout Group of the Year 2015
Cub Scout Leader of the Year 2016

And we still keep getting nominated!

Beavers, Cubs and Scouts is for both boys AND girls!  We incorporate fun and games into every session, promote teamwork and leadership, ensure that the young people are challenged so they can reach the best of their ability and of course provide learning through ADVENTURE!

Cubs Scouts visited the Salvation Army - 02nd February

Cubs had a wonderful time visiting Alison & her team at the Salvation Army as part of their World Challenge Badge.
We learnt about the amazing things the Salvation Army do for people in the community and everybody brought something to donate to the food bank.
What a wonderful evening!

What a load of rubbish!

Cubs & Scouts visit Shanks Recycling Centre - 16th Feb 2017
Cubs & Scouts had the fantastic opportunity to visit Shanks Waste Disposal centre at Bolton-Upon-Dearn to see what happens to all of the rubbish we throw away from Doncaster, Barnsley and Rotherham.
We played a recycling game and learnt how our waste is turned into fuel bricks which are then transported to the energy centre near Castleford.  You have probably seen it - the one just off of the A1M.
